The study identifies best practices in the dissemination of dance for young audiences (DYA) in Canada based on interviews with artists, companies, artists’ agents, presenters, networks and representatives of federal and provincial public funding institutions.

Main Opportunities

  • Provide resource information in advance and undertake out­reach efforts with schools pre, during and post performance
  • Promote long term partnerships through coproduction and presentation, including with galleries and museums
  • Encourage coproduction between DYA and TYA companies
  • Encourage TYA venues and se­ries to present DYA productions
  • Encourage larger organizations to mentor smaller ones

Recommendations

  • Support workshops and out­reach efforts with schools pre, during and post performance as an eligible touring expense (Recommendation A7)
  • Increase funding for creative residencies, including with partners from other disciplines (Recommendation B2)
  • Support mentorship activities as an eligible touring expense (Recommendation C4)
Presenter networking and coordination

  • Dedicated DYA Coordinator function within presenter networks
  • Dedicated outreach coordi­nator attached to individual presenters
  • Deepening relationships be­tween agents and presenters
  • Developing presenters’ cura­torial expertise: Networking and professional develop­ment in the context of pre­senter trade fairs, festivals

  • Support dedicated regional/ local outreach coordinator
  • Involve agents in outreach ac­tivities
  • Value of seeing work and engag­ing in exchanges with peers around DYA  

Recommendations

  • Provide support for better co­ordination at the local and re­gional levels for DYA (Recommendation A6)
  • Provide more travel subsidies to attend trade fairs, YA festivals and attend performances inter provincially and internationally (Recommendation C2)

  • Offering digital outreach ac­tivities
  • Investing in research and creation to support presentation in digital format

Main Opportunities

  • Support digital learning tools, including interactive tools and live streaming before a perfor­mance
  • Support investment in research and creation for digital platforms

Recommendations

  • Support the implementation of digital investment strategies for dance art­ists, presenters and networks (Recommendation D3)
