Yesenia Fuentes


Yesenia Fuentes is a Bogotá-born Montreal-based contemporary dancer, choreographer, Butoh practitioner and educator who has worked across Canada and internationally. She holds a BA in Human Relations (Concordia University), was trained in contemporary dance (l’École de danse contemporaine de Montréal), and has 10 years of Butoh training. Selected creation works include: The Light From The Windows (It’s gonna be noir- Cité des Hospitalière), Control and Insitu Connecting (Exit-Entry: Performance series), On The Stairs (Regroupement Pied Carré, Festival d’art performatif de Trois-Rivières, Peripheral Hours), Stem (Mainline Gallery and Montreal Arts Interculturels), Körper (Danse Directe-France and The Array Space), and Antikörper which received sustained mentorship under the MAI. Selected co-creations include: Ako with Danza Descalza Collective (FURIES – festival de danse contemporaine, Festival de danse en Atlantique, Performance Works, All Over the Map + VLAFF), Libertad with Edgar Zendejas (MAI/Montreal arts, interculturels), Once Upon No Time (Tatwerk, Germany), and Thin Stem Cooper (Butoh Festival of dance Verdo Utopio, France). Yesenia is currently working on a new piece entitled Memory of a Body Through Time which explores legacies of embodied violence from her lived experiences in Bogotá, and the possibility for freedom, joy and transformation through embodiment.
