À l’Est de Nod is a 4-hour continuous performance installation in which the public is invited to wander at its own pace through three communicating spaces (3 times): La forêt, L’errant.e, L’abîme.

Largely inspired by the text of L’errant, the prologue to Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s Le Legs de Caïn, this artistic approach proposes an experiential reflection on the physical and psychic limits, both intimate and political, that we share between ourselves and others (La forêt – time 1), between ourselves and the world (L’errante – time 2) and between ourselves and ourselves (L’abîme – time 3).

À l’Est de Nod is a practice in listening and perceptive attention. To create this complex, evolving body score, project leader Andréane Leclerc draws on the inherent parameters of contortion, which she has been practising for over twenty years: amplitude and resistance, global causality, rupture and randomness, dialogue, decentring, and agentivity. Her work is rooted in somatic body practices and transdisciplinarity.

This piece is the fruit of a systemic writing approach, in which we find a group of 9 to 27 performers who have become “body-natures”. More instinctive and cosmic than civilized and disciplined, the body-nature differs from the social body. It evolves on the periphery of social and institutional spaces, developing on the threshold of a spectacular artifice.

The question, “How do contortion inform non-contortionist bodies?” marks the starting point for this singular artistic approach, which ponders and questions the concept of limit as structure. If this phenomenon seems non-existent within nature, how do limits travel, reorganize themselves between bodies and from one body to another, through our sensations, our ideas, and our realities? What can emerge from an encounter between the open, porous, and shifting limits of the body-nature, and the systemic, disciplinary and structured limits of the body-social?
