David Albert-Toth et Emily Gualtieri
Inspired by political philosopher Thomas Hobbes’ reasoning that human beings constantly hover between a desire for power and the power of fear, LA VIE ATTEND explores secrets and strategy in a group of five men. They are teammates, enemies, victors and mourners, instigators and witnesses.
With LA VIE ATTEND, creative duo Emily Gualtieri and David Albert-Toth offer an illusory work, between dance and theatricality, that deftly manipulates the deep primal tendencies we often avoid. Informed by Hobbes’ premise that the constant vacillation between the emotions of fear and hope is at the root of all human actions - that either fear or hope is present at all times in all people - the fragility of Hobbes' social contract theory is transposed to the contract into which the public and the interpreter enter together, hope and fear in hand. Life in all of its visceral and vulnerable contradictions, its pride and its shame, is laid out on the stage.
